A Warming of American-Iranian Relations: Motives and the Prospects for Success

Volume 1|Issue 5| Nov 2013 |Research Papers and Policy Reports

Abstract

This paper presents the prospects for a breakthrough in American-Iranian relations, one which could lead to a resolution of the present strains over Tehran’s nuclear program and the country’s regional influence. The paper argues that Iran’s desire for warmer relations with Washington is a tactic deployed by the President of the Islamic Republic and supported by the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamanei, and is driven largely by the adverse impacts of Western sanctions on Iran, which Iran can accept no more of.
