Tunisia’s Legislative Elections: the Contest between Revolutionary Forces and the Ancien Regime

Volume |Issue 11| Jan 2014 |Research Papers and Policy Reports

Abstract

This paper presents the result of the first legislative elections to be held in Tunisia since the toppling of the Ben Ali regime. Since the transformations sweeping across the entire region, Tunisia has become the standard-bearer for democratic change in the Arab region. Given the sharp polarizations which cross-cut through the Arab political sphere—pitting Islamists against secular forces and revolutionary groups against counter-revolutionary, ancien regime elements—the peaceful nature of this massive procedural step is a deeply significant harbinger for optimism across the Arab region.
