The Shebaa Operation: a Restrained Response from Hezbollah

On January 18, 2015, Israeli air strike targeted a convoy of militia leaders located near the Syrian city of Quneitra. The attack led to the killing of six Hezbollah field commanders as well as a high-ranking Iranian officer who was on site together with them. Hezbollah’s retaliation, which came ten days later in the shape of an attack on a military patrol in the Shebaa Farms region, a part of Lebanese territory which continues to be under Israeli control, resulted in the deaths of two Israeli military personnel, one of whom was an officer. The attack was the first violent action to disrupt the state of calm which has prevailed across the Galilee since the end of the July, 2006 Lebanon War.
